7 Tips for a Healthy Lawn

Updated: Aug 10, 2021

It’s spring time and your lawn is starting to show signs of life! Following a few simple practices will help your lawn stay strong, healthy and free of weeds and diseases.

Here are 7 tips from our experts to help you grow and maintain a lush green lawn this season:

1. Raking

If your garden still has winter remnants, it should be been cleared up first. Pull out dead plants, clear away fallen leaves and broken twigs as these will add to your lawn’s thatch layer.

Then start raking your garden. This helps to loosen and remove any clumps of plants or grass left behind which can hinder the new season’s growth. The best time to rake is when soil is not very soft or muddy as it can disturb or pull up healthy grass crowns.

2. Dethatching

Spring is the right time to dethatch lawns. Not all lawns need it, but it is recommended to restore lawn health. Thatch is the layer of organic debris that forms at the base of grass plants. It is a mix of dead plant material, which at times take a long time to decompose. If the build-up is faster than the rate of decomposition, the thatch layer becomes too thick and does not allow water, nutrients or air to penetrate the soil. A thin layer (about half an inch) of thatch is required for a healthy lawn as it acts as a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations.

3. Overseeding

Brown patches on lush green sight are a common problem many of us face. Overseeding your lawn is the best strategy you can use to avoid brown patches and maintain a lush green yard. Overseeding also help reinvigorate bare, worn-out lawns, making them look almost brand new.

4. Aerating

The soil under the lawn tends to get compacted over time as you walk over it. Because of this, it is important to let your lawn breathe by aerating it. The grass roots need healthy and nutritious soil to remain strong and green. Provide your soil with an application of Nurture Growth bio fertilizer to improve the soil biology.

5. Fertilizing

Apply the first dose of spring fertilizer about three weeks after grass starts to look green and you see the spring growth spurt. Make sure your lawn is mowed before application. It is important to apply fertilizer at the right time to ensure you don’t feed the weeds!

Here’s how to fertilize your lawn the right way:

- Ensure your lawn gets the correct amount of fertilizer by making sure it is spread evenly. - Determine the size of your lawn size to begin with. A lawn measuring 50sqft needs just 1

teaspoon Nurture Growth biofertilizer mixed with 1 litre of water.

- The easiest way to apply our liquid fertilizer is to fill the required volume in a chapin sprayer

with the dial to 2. Attach sprayer to the garden hose and apply mixture directly on grass.

- For best results, apply the spray on freshly cut grass during the morning hours before the

day gets too warm.

- Cover all areas of your lawn to ensure the fertilizer is applied evenly, allowing you to

minimize the brown spots.

- Water you lawn generously throughout the week and repeat the application after 2 weeks.

6. Watering

Lawns needs about an inch of water every week. For best results, water your lawn early in the morning from 4am-9am when there is maximum water retention in the soil to ensure optimal absorption. Is it very important to note that watering needs vary by region.

For mountain and arid desert areas, lawns need to be watered frequently as temperatures rise.

Also, don’t over water your lawn to try making them green faster, patience is key!

7. Mowing

Your lawn needs to be mowed regularly to maintain a healthy lawn. Mowing the right way ensures that the turf remains healthy, tolerant to any water shortages and makes it easy to pull out weeds. Mowing depends on the type of grass. Start when the ground is dry enough and grass is long to keep a proper height. Grass that is too short allows sunlight to reach soil, encouraging weed seeds to germinate. It also favors shallow root development, which makes the lawn more easily susceptible to drought stress.

The level of care you lawn needs depends on the type of grass you’ve chosen to plant and the weather conditions in our area. Using Nurture Growth bio fertilizer will boost your lawn’s ability to extract all the nutrients they need to grow well provided they get need water.
